Dear reader,

Thank you for subscribing! This month my country is celebrating Thanksgiving, which is more than a time to be grateful for the good things. It is also a time to be grateful for the difficult things, and this year I am giving thanks for a heavy loss that I experienced last year. Just before last Thanksgiving I had decommissioned All Souls Protestant Church, a congregation that I had planted and pastored for six years. Though I have faced many pitfalls in my career, the end of All Souls was the lowest and I worried for my family and the many unknowns ahead. Nevertheless, there was a blessing in the loss, for it put me on a new path with surprising opportunities.

From January to March I taught Black American History and Theology at the Universities of St. Gallen and Basel. Then in April I led a workshop with the Security Policy Forum of St. Gallen, and took part in a panel discussion on religion and racism for Mission 21. In May the band that I do spoken word pieces for, called Noumuso, had an album release concert with a full house. Then in June I took part in a documentary by the Smithsonian Institution while speaking at a conference for young adults in Biel. And finally from July up to the present I have been interviewed by SRF, overseeing theology students writing seminar papers, publishing articles for academic journals, and preaching and lecturing in France.

For each month since last November I have been ministering in ways that I never dreamed of. Yet, even more than this I have been enjoying life with a sweetness that I never dreamed of. My family is thriving and secure, my relationships have been enriched and deepened, my faith is stronger and more grounded, and my health is wonderful (I even joined a gym). I have gained so much with the loss of All Souls, and this November I am beyond grateful for it. From that painful moment filled with cares has come a wellspring of joys that make me hopeful for the future.

Indeed, Thanksgiving is more than being grateful for the good things; it is gratitude for the difficult things that come our way. I pray that you would have this full gratitude in all things and find a wellspring of joys that bring you hope for the days, months, and years to come.

Blessings,
